Tips for Playing Chords

You probably already have experienced that pressing a chord button will make it play. But there are 2 other nice features for playing as well.

1:The piano panel at the bottom of the app

2:The Interface Lock
Lock Button Open
If you play the chords directly from the progression band, you can lock the interface, so you won’t mess around while playing.

3:Use Chord Inversions
It’s not unimportant how the chord is inverted.
Experiment with the adjustment buttons to optimize the sound of the chords

4:MIDI Volume
If you use ProChords as a MIDI trigger, be shure to set MIDI Volume right, some sample sounds, can sound very diffirent depending on the MIDI Volume.

How To Add, Copy, Paste & Delete A Chord http://prochords.dk/w/?p=599 http://prochords.dk/w/?p=599#comments Thu, 28 Feb 2013 11:25:57 +0000 http://prochords.dk/w/?p=599 Add & Change Chords Manually

You can also add and change a chord manually, just press the chord edit button.
The modified chord is added to the progression the same way as in the chord suggestion view.

Using the Name Wheel

In some situations you may want to use the chord wheel in the edit panel to find the chord you are looking for. There are several thousands different chords in the system, so the list has been split up into 4 wheels, in order to ease accessibility.
Start from the left by entering the key
Second wheel contains (add, aug, dim,m,maj, mMaj, sus)
Third wheel contains the numbers (2,4,6,7,9,11,13)
Fourth wheel contains all the rarely used extensions
The wheel will have been programmed so it’s only shows possible combinations.
If you don’t find the chord you where looking for it most likely because you name the different (Read: “ProChords naming standard”)

Using the NotesView

If you don’t know the name of the chord you’re looking for, you could try the notes wheel.
It will look for the a chord that correspond to the chosen notes.
NB: You can only submit note combinations recognized as chords.

Copy, Paste & Delete Chords

All selected chords in the progression can be copied and deleted.
When you paste them again, they will be placed in front of the red pointer.
Pasting will eventually overwrite a chord if the pointer isn’t standing in between two chords.

Drag the progression in position.

Press the "Chord Suggestion" button and your specific chord progression is matched up with the 12.600 songs in Pro Chords pattern recognitions engine.

NB:The suggestions depends on the key of the song.
So be sure to set the key right in the settings menu.

Star Ratings Explained

The suggested chords are rated by popularity and similarity to your progression.

As a thumb rule you could say that:
5 Stars = Very common.
4 Stars = Common.
3 Stars = Happens.
2 Stars = Rarely happens
1 Stars = The match is not perfect, but could work.

Adjustment Buttons Explained

In both the Suggestion View and Edit View it’s possible to change the bass node, octave and inverse the chord.
If you lock the Suggestion/Edit View, the result won’t change as you drag the progression band around.

How to tweak a Chord

A chord can obviously be played in numerous ways. ProChords does not cover all combinations, but with the tweak buttons you will get pretty far.

The bass buttons:
If you take a look at the piano on top of the screen while you press the bass buttons.
+ and – will move the bass note. You will see that the symbol on the piano above appears either in black or red. Black indicates that the note is part of the chord you have chosen. Red is for notes that are not part of the chosen chord. If you prefer no bass note at all, just press – till the note disappears en the left side of the piano.

The octave buttons:

Let’s say you have a C chord in your progression band and want to go down to a B chord. ProChords will suggest a chord upwards almost an octave higher.
Then press the -1 button, And the chord will be placed an octave lower.
The octave buttons affects all the chord suggestions you are about to add.

The inversion buttons:
If you press either the + button or – button the chord will roll up or down on the piano.

Adding a Random Chord

If you press “Random Chord”. Pro Chords will randomly pick one of it’s suggestions.
So you could say the chord isn’t completely random. It’s suppose to make sense in some way.

The best app for songwriters
by SuburbanGiant on Jan 4, 2010 v1.0.0

5 stars
If you’ve ever wanted to write a song, but needed help on chord progressions, proCords is the app for you. This has helped me unlock all of my writing potential by allowing me to focus on the song and not all of the little technical details. Nuff’ said.
A musician
by Alex1989P on Jan 4, 2010 v1.0.0

4 stars
As a trained musician and a composer, I was hesitant to buy this app–fearing it would be redundant or of no real benefit. Most of the reviews listed here at the time of this post weren’t of much help either, as most of the authors sounded as though they had never held an instrument or studied harmony. What this is not: A shortcut (necessarily…) What this is: A strictly objective third-party look into harmony which allows the user to be surprised into using a chord of unique harmonic consequence. If I am not careful, it is easy for me to fall into the trap of being to repetitive with my structural choices. ProCords gives me fresh objective perspective in a non-destructive format. I recommend it. Even if it helps me to only make one outstanding harmonic choice, it is worth it to me.
Great App

I think this is the best music app I’ve bought on the iPhone it’s complete and it’s easy to use. I recommend this app if you have trouble figuring out chords that can match the ones you are already working on. The one thing I would really like since I don’t play piano that much is if you could choose between other instruments for instance guitar since guitars a one the most popular instruments buy over all the app does the work!
Pretty Perfect!
by fxw2 on Jan 3, 2010 v1.0.0

5 stars
This app by itself makes my iphone purchase worthwhile. You can literally compose each measure of your song (not specifics but the general chords for that measure) and have the entire song exported to your email as a midi file, which can be imported into your favorite music production software. ProCords is really a huge help for songwriters, if you don’t know which way to take your song, the app suggests dozens of chords that could make up the next measure. Its not meant to teach music theory but by paying attention to the chords you are choosing and using this app enough it is not a problem to teach yourself. I am dying to see a version for guitar and in fact, the developer is already in the process of doing that too! Thanks guy.

Greatest Creative Tool There Is
by trava74 on Jan 6, 2010 v1.0.0

5 stars
I’ve owned this app for less then an hour now and I know without a doubt that this is the greatest tool for creating music that I’ve ever owned (besides my guitar of course). This is like having doors opened for you that you might have never known existed. I have quite a few songs that I’ve been sitting on, some for more than 10 years, and I can’t wait to see what Pro Chords suggests. Most of the memory in my iPhone is occupied with music apps, and this is the most useful and brilliant one yet. If you play any sort of instrument, you need to own this app.

I’m always coming up with song ideas in the most creatively inconvenient places (on the subway, at work, etc.). I recommend this to any songwriter/musician looking for an inspirational creative tool.
Terrific, But Needs To Record
by PeachesNYC on Jan 4, 2010 v1.0.0

4 stars
I’m loving this app. It’s great for non-musicians to noodle around at building song snippets or just seeing if you can re-create the chords from songs you already know (took me about a minute to re-create the intro to “Lean On Me”). But what the app desperately needs is some sort of record function. I’ve come up with so many snippets, I’ve started to forget the tempo and rhythm of some of them. Another nice touch would be a piano keyboard page that would allow you to pluck out melodies as you play back the chords you have already recorded. All in all, a great start on a very cool app.

This is a great App (updated)
by AG Hatecraft on Jan 12, 2010 v1.0.0

5 stars
I love this app. It’s really useful, and well thought out. It’s worth the money. I do, however, experience quite a bit of lag once my song exceeds 3 chords. It’s still usable, but my 3G doesn’t seem to like it much. *edit* I just updated my phone to the latest OS/firmware, and now the app runs great. Make sure you are up to date before using this app. Now that it functions as intended, prochords gets 5 stars. It’s a useful song sketching tool with a powerful and handy midi export feature. It’s well worth the money for anyone who takes advantage of midi, and enjoyable even for those that don’t.

I am usually able to write a decent melody off of a chord or two. Transitioning beyond that is my weakness and this program helps a lot. For those that need guitar tablature for chords, export to midi and then use a program like Tabledit to translate to tablature. There’s lots of programs that translate midis to tab, but Tabledit is the best I have found over the years.

This app is so well designed for what it’s supposed to do. I need help with a chord progression, I open this app, and five minutes later I’m exporting a MIDI track to import into Ableton Live. The UI is so fluid and helpful, it makes sense and is a complete joy to use. With ProChord I can work on songs anywhere and when away from my instruments. The only way this app would be better is if it were free, and let’s face it—$6 is as close to free as any music software worth using.

This little toy/tool is wonderful! It allows you to play chord progressions when you are thinking about a song lyric and want to sing it with chords etc. It also gives you the power to rethink progressions when you are not near an instrument. To be great, add diagrams for the chords on a guitar! If this was on there i would have paid another dollor or two. This is not asking much. Hope to see this update soon! Then i’ll change it to 5 stars. Also, if they release a ProChords just for guitar, i’ll be pissed. Nowhere does this say ProChords Piano, so they should just add it to this one, and change the icon. If they were planning on releasing different apps for different instruments, they should have said so. That way people could have waited. I don’t regret buying it though.

Great App – One Suggestion

An extraordinary program. As an a cappella arranger–and as someone who will forever regret not paying better attention in my theory classes–I MUST know what chords my songs have before being able to write multiple parts out. This program is exactly what I have been looking for. How have I survived for so long without it?! With the following improvements, this program would easily be worth $10. — Better file management. —-Folders and sub-folders to organize files (sub-folders because I see myself using this program a lot!). —-A way to email/export MULTIPLE files, either by selecting manually, or all existing in a folder, or ALL. They should be put into a zip file. Exporting to MIDI is nice, but I’m more concerned with data backup and restore (I’d rather text just convert the exports to MIDI on my own desktop PC when I need it…which I don’t at the moment). — Better UI for long chord progressions. —-Additional navigational button to play the current chord and move left (backwards to previous chord). —-SOMETHING to more easily find the desired chord in a long progression…even a simple textual scroll-list would work. —-A lock-the-”drag track” to play the chords on screen, without accidentally making them fly off one side or the other. —-A way to copy multiple contiguous (next to each other) chords and paste them either into the current file or into another file. A simple “mark” button (or perhaps double-clicking the copy button), where you mark the first chord, then move to the final chord and press copy. Then paste as normal. One more thing. I cannot for the life of me figure out the next chord in America from West Side Story: C/E Bass:C — C/G Bass:C — F Bass:F — F/C Bass:F — F/A Bass:F — C/E Bass:C — C/G Bass:C — G/B Bass:G — G/B Bass:G — G Bass:G — ???? A little help please?!?!?!

I do five reviews a year at most – and only for exceptional (IMHO) apps. As a professional songwriter (jingles, ghost-writing, TV, and games) this is FINALLY the app I’ve been waiting for! I got this, simple songwriter, 4track, beatmaker ages ago, and quite foolishly that xenon studio whathaveyou. I really like this app and simple songwriter. These two apps do not try to replace real instruments. Why they do is offer (especially prochords) an iPhone unique experience. Great work. PLEASE add a record/playback function, possibly one that displays the chords whilst being played (I’m a guitar teacher and this would be a fun improve tool) and for the love of pete an audio recording option to lay down scratch vocal tracks! Do that and you have the perfect on the go song writing tool. My best ideas come to me in the car or half asleep which is a bit inconvinient. Add a recording function and I would no lie pay quadruple the price without blinking. Oh, and I’d make all my students with an iPhone or iPod (which is 90% of them) buy this app. I just might anyway.

This app is great for giving you different chord options, their suitability with the flexibility to change the chord or notes as you wish. Easy to use. Just being able to see all the different chords, how they sound and the notes played in itself is worth the purchase. Definitely helps speed up the creative flow.

I was searching for a chord app for piano, when I ran into this one. It does what I wanted, but much more! I wanted to learn to play ‘A Salty Dog’ (Procol Harum) in this app I entered the chords bij name as I could read on chordie.com, I exported it to midi and imported it into logic and then I made a print of the score: great. And now I’m going to explore the new song making features…. Til now I used simple songwriter, which gives a format based on the circle of fifth’s, but now I can get outside of that. With the record function to come it’s promissing to be even better. This app is the best app I bought ( 1,5 year iphone-owner) so far! Sjoerd

Very simple to use and effective as a musical sketchpad for ideas. The really cool thing about this is that you can export your progressions as midi files to your email address, then import them into Logic/Garageband for further editing.

Mvh.

How to get started with ProChords http://prochords.dk/w/?p=205 http://prochords.dk/w/?p=205#comments Mon, 02 Nov 2009 23:22:38 +0000 http://prochords.dk/w/?p=205 There are a few essential things you need to know before you start using ProChords.
So let me introduce the basic elements of ProChords User interface

The Arrow Pointer:
The arrow in top of the screen indicates which of the chords above will be affected by your action.

The Progression Band:
When you open the interface, you will find that there is a single chord pre chosen. This chord constitutes the first chord in the song you are about to write. And the first of any number of chords you can add from here on. The sequence of chords you choose is referred to as your Progression Band. The chosen chords can be dragged back and forwards by using your finger on the screen.

How to add a chord http://prochords.dk/w/?p=204 http://prochords.dk/w/?p=204#comments Mon, 02 Nov 2009 23:21:47 +0000 http://prochords.dk/w/?p=204 This guide is outdated, check out the latest here

Drag the pre chosen C chord on top of the screen to the left by using your finger. Press the “find match” button. Press the chord you want next from the list. Press green push button.
Drag this chord left to make space for at new chord. Add a few more chords if you like, and you have a Progression Band!

How to change a chord in your song
Drag the progression band from side to side and you will notice the arrow pointer can be positioned in three places in relation to the chord.

The Progression band can be dragged, so you can add and edit as you please.
• To extend the chord progression – Drag the Progression Band to the far left and press the Find Match button, as described above.
• To insert a chord between two chords – Drag the band, so the arrow points at the space between the chords and press the Find Match button
• To insert a chord in the beginning – Drag the band to the far right and press the Find Match button
• To substitute a chord with an alternative chord – Drag the band so the arrow points at the chord and press the Find Match button
• NB: If you only want to adjust the way the chord is played, or change a single note in the chord. the Edit Feature is likely to be the convenient option.

When You have decided what part of the Progression Band you want to elaborate, press the Find Match button and ProChords will make a search in its extensive database looking for similarities to the chord sequence you are focusing on.

A list of suggestions will appear. The list can be scrolled.

All the chords suggestions are rated, based on similarity to the huge number of successful songs in the database.
• 5 stars are the most common choices in the song database
• 4 stars common choices
• 3 stars are chords with an edge, but still commonly used
• 2 stars are chords that are unusual, but has been used occasionally.
• 1 star: ProChords found a related match

It’s up to you to decide, what chord you prefer to insert. To make your choice, tab on any of the different suggestions you find after pressing the find match button. To hear what they sound like before choosing them just press the chord. It may be helpful to hear them in immediate context with the chords you’ve already chosen for your chord progression. So this is what you could do:

There are two different techniques for playing the chord progression:

• Press the visible chords in the progression band, one by one, and then press the chord from the Find Match options you’re thinking of.
• Alternatively, add the chord to the progression band by pressing the round green push button , just below the arrow pointer. Then use the three play buttons in the bottom of the screen to hear the progression.
• The left play button, plays the first chord in the progression
• The center play button, repeat the current chord
• And the right play button, plays the next chord in the progression.
If You have reached the end of the progression, the right play button will loop it.

You can close the find match screen again, either by pressing the green check mark button or the red X button.
The green check mark button saves the changes you’ve made and the red X button cancels them.
You don’t have to close the find match panel
You can drag the progression band one step and go on searching for the next chord.

A chord can obviously be played in numerous ways. ProChords does not cover all combinations, but with the tweak buttons you will get pretty far.

The bass buttons:
If you take a look at the piano on top of the screen while you press the bass buttons.
+ and – will move the bass note. You will see that the symbol on the piano above appears either in blue or red. Blue indicates that the note is part of the chord you have chosen.

(Until further development of ProChords, chords containing a 9, 11 or 13 can’t be inverted).

How to use the lock function in the find match panel:
Assume you’ve been clicking around among the suggestions in the find match panel for a new chord in a sequence, and you hear several chords you would like to use in your progression but in different places in the song.
Normally Find Match will come up with chords that are likely to follow the one the arrow above is pointing at. Using the lock function allows you to keep all chords suggested at a different chord, which allows you to place a particular chord you like anywhere in the Progression Band.

• Press the “+” button
• Name your new progression
• Press the “OK” button
By default all new chord progressions are in the key of C
and uses flat the flat notation (Db,Eb ,Gb, Ab, Bb)
To change this:
• Press the “C” in the lower right corner.
• Find your preferred key and notation style (flats or sharps) .
• Press the green check mark button
• You will now have the option to:

Either transpose only this chord by pressing NO, with the consequence that following chords you add will be proposed in this new key
or press YES which will lead to, that the entire song is transposed to the key you have chosen
The NO function can be helpful in the case that you have typed your chords into ProChords manually through the edit panel. but have forgotten to set the key of the song initially.

9. How to import a song into ProChords
Let’s say you have a chord progression you would like to import into ProChords.
At the moment ProChords doesn’t support import from other sources, so you will have to type them in manually.
In most songs you will find the vast majority of chords among the find match suggestions – and often among the first 5.

If You don’t find exactly the chord you where looking for, pick another one closely related.
When you have entered them all, use the edit panel to fine tune them. I use to be the fastest method.
