If you are a musician who likes to learn new songs and techniques by listening to the same piece of music over and over but wish that the music could be played a little slower, then you’ll enjoy Amazing SlowDowner. You can repeat any section of the music at full speed, slow it down or even speed it up by stretching the music by -50% to 400% without changing the pitch! You can also change the pitch up or down in semi-tones or fine-tune in cents (100ths of a semi-tone) to suit your instrument. This program works with your iTunes, CD-ROM drive or any MP3/Wave file on your harddisk and does all processing in real-time, no time wasted on recording or processing.

For Mac and PC ( and sadly not iPhone )

Please add a fretboard-view!

…weiter so! Kaufen!

… für diese super App. Tolles User Interface.

This app is by far one of the best apps for composing music. The menu system is great and there is lots of options to choose from. One of the best features of this app is the ability to export your chords to midi. I am just learning to use a sequencer and multiple VSTs at home to create music and this app is a fantastic way to learn which chords suit others. No more struggling to find the right chords. Prochords is a must for anyone composing music.

This is a fantastic app and well worth the price. Very useful when writing, and just fun to play with when not. I’d like a bit of a deadzone or slight delay when pressing chords on the timeline before the dragging starts, as I tend to play potential progressions by pressing the chords I already have on the timeline then pressing the suggested chords to see if they fit, and it’s easy to drag the timeline along a bit and get the ‘do you want to save this selection’ message. But that’s a really minor point for a great app.

A brilliant tool for any musician on the go. It has a very intuitive interface so you’ll be chaining together chord progressions in minutes. The midi export will allow you to transfer compositions to other workstations. By way of constructive criticism, the addition of sustained string or pad samples would help, as sadly the piano soon becomes tedious on the ears. I’ve rated this at 4 because I would’ve preferred just a few more instruments.

There is no other songwriting tool for the iPhone that puts so much emphasis on exploration, discovery, and PLAY. Every other option I’ve tried is too focused on the music theory, instead of working with your ears. They make you spend too much time in your head, instead of in the music and in the moment. I know music theory and play multiple instruments (some with decades of classical training) but when I am writing a song I want above all to be in a spirit of play. ProChords, while a powerful and serious tool, is at heart all about PLAY. It puts the focus on listening and exploring the possibilities. If you know theory, you can still be guided by the chord names when you want to be, but the emphasis is on letting the sound of the suggested chords inspire you. Want something conventional and poppy? Try one of the chords with a high number of stars in the match rating. Want something a bit weirder and off-kilter? Try a chord with a lower rating. What is amazing about this tool is how it never limits you too much creatively. Any time you search for a chord there are usually dozens of options, but it organizes and filters the chord options just enough to provide you with the guidance and inspiration to keep moving forward. This app has immediately proven its usefulness. Within the first 15 minutes after watching the excellent tutorial video I had an entire brand new song sketched out. It is utterly inspiring and worth every penny. The app store is full of tools to make all kinds of musical noises, but if you want to actually write SONGS, ProChords is the app to have! — For a 1.0 release, this is a spectacular achievement. The interface is speedy and usable, and the app fills a very real need. But I do have some suggestions for the next version: 1. Add the option to select a duration and number of repetitions for each chord. (e.g. duration: quarter note, repetitions: 4) This enables making a more complete sketch of the song’s structure. It also makes the MIDI export much more usable. 2. Add an option to auto-play the progression, using the duration & repetition data from #1. 3. The option to do audio recordings, either of the auto-play or just of whatever the user is currently playing. It would be awesome if this also included the ability to use the microphone to simultaneously lay down melody ideas from a voice or instrument. 4. An instant MIDI capture option when jamming around on the search screen. Sometimes I come up with a progression or rhythm that I don’t want to use in the current song, but I want to catch it before the moment is gone. 5. A free-text Notes screen for each saved song. This could be used for lyrics, notes on instrumentation ideas, or whatever. And I disagree with any suggestion to add fretboards or the like. There are plenty of apps for learning chords and scales - this one should stay focused on songwriting. Once again, this app rocks! These suggestions are just ways to make what is already a 5-star tool even better.

how is “AMAZING!” for an understatement?

first off id like to say i have every worthy music app on the itunes store and have seen some great products out there but this lil buddy is just awsome to say the least. ill keep it short and sweet; if your a music fanatic like me, and love a good product for a great price, you just cant lose and stand to gain so much for so little…one function that would kick some behind would be a fretboard option for guitar or bass violin etc. at the top of the screen where the keyboard is. perhaps in a future update, *hint* *hint* *wink* *wink* *cough* *cough*… thanks for developing a great product. good job dev team!

Lots of potential!

I play sax and don’t own a keyboard or guitar. A product like this is a very good way for me to explore chord progressions on the go. The interface is innovative and functions very smoothly. Unlike those who would like to see the chords on a fretboard, I would prefer a display of either the notes on the staff or even just the note names that make up the chord. The ladt option should be really easy to implement. Even without that, I find this to be one of the most worthwhile music apps I have tried.

Great mobile music writing app!

I accidentally came across this app (really, is there any other way to find apps these days?), and I discovered it’s a brilliantly concieved and executed mobile song writing tool. It is very polished and complete. But don’t get the mistaken impression this app is something other than what is described. It’s not a complete music composition system like GarageBand or such. It’s an iPhone tool to help you write chord-based songs. To create a full song you would then export from ProChords into something like GarageBand. Also don’t make the mistake of thinking that this is some sort of automatic song generator. You are writing the song. ProChords assists you to find chord progressions that work together based on standard harmonic rules. But with that help even a novice can start to put together really compelling music. It is well worth the price, which really isn’t very much when you think about it. Check out the tutorial. But trust me, this app is brilliantly done.

Amazing app!
by dabest111 on Dec 10, 2009 v1.0.0

I was really afraid to buy this one since it had no reviews and it’s quiet expensive, but it was worth it! However there are two thing to make it better. There needs to be an urgent update so that the app can show you how to play the chords on the guitar. Right now it only shows you how to play it on the keyboard, but the user should have the option of choosing wheter it shows you how to play the chords on the keyboard or on the guitar. The second thing that should be added is an extra window so that you are able to write lyrics without exiting the app, therefore one can completely compose a song. Right now everything else works great.

It works on so many levels. It is almost like a paint program. It takes the way you can paint with music in a program like Bloom, but to a different level. Where you get play and in the process of play figure out or play out your direction, your instincts, your intuition or imagination, AND it keeps a very straight forward and still open ended record of what you’ve done. A brilliant working tool that is worth a fortune to anyone who loves music, or wants to open a door to music!

This is a great feature! This app is a tool I can use in my writing sessions. I can create chord progressions anywhere. This along with other apps will prove to be useful.

Some have misunderstood this app. This does not write songs for you. If you are not a song writer/producer you probably won’t have much use for this app. I am always looking for new chord progressions for pop, hip hop and Latin music productions. I have actually been waiting for a mobile version of this app. It is an essential tool for new chord progression ideas. It is also an incredibly complete tool with the ability to export MIDI and import into your favorite MIDI production program.

This app opens up so many writing possibilities — not only by supplying an enormous chord palette, but by making it so simple and fun to playfully experiment. I came up with fresh sounding progressions immediately and sent the MIDI files to my DAW for further tweaking. Looking at the other reviews, I notice even non-musicians are enjoying the app! I love the cross-pollination and I think someone like Brian Eno would be delighted to discover this app as a fresh “oblique strategy.”

If you’ve ever wanted to write a song, but needed help on chord progressions, proCords is the app for you. This has helped me unlock all of my writing potential by allowing me to focus on the song and not all of the little technical details. Nuff’ said.

As a trained musician and a composer, I was hesitant to buy this app–fearing it would be redundant or of no real benefit. Most of the reviews listed here at the time of this post weren’t of much help either, as most of the authors sounded as though they had never held an instrument or studied harmony. What this is not: A shortcut (necessarily…) What this is: A strictly objective third-party look into harmony which allows the user to be surprised into using a chord of unique harmonic consequence. If I am not careful, it is easy for me to fall into the trap of being to repetitive with my structural choices. ProCords gives me fresh objective perspective in a non-destructive format. I recommend it. Even if it helps me to only make one outstanding harmonic choice, it is worth it to me.

I think this is the best music app I’ve bought on the iPhone it’s complete and it’s easy to use. I recommend this app if you have trouble figuring out chords that can match the ones you are already working on. The one thing I would really like since I don’t play piano that much is if you could choose between other instruments for instance guitar since guitars a one the most popular instruments buy over all the app does the work!

This app by itself makes my iphone purchase worthwhile. You can literally compose each measure of your song (not specifics but the general chords for that measure) and have the entire song exported to your email as a midi file, which can be imported into your favorite music production software. ProCords is really a huge help for songwriters, if you don’t know which way to take your song, the app suggests dozens of chords that could make up the next measure. Its not meant to teach music theory but by paying attention to the chords you are choosing and using this app enough it is not a problem to teach yourself. I am dying to see a version for guitar and in fact, the developer is already in the process of doing that too! Thanks guy.

This is like having doors opened for you that you might have never known existed. I have quite a few songs that I’ve been sitting on, some for more than 10 years, and I can’t wait to see what Pro Chords suggests. Most of the memory in my iPhone is occupied with music apps, and this is the most useful and brilliant one yet. If you play any sort of instrument, you need to own this app.

This app is fantastic! If they ever combined this with Guitar Toolkit, it would be the greatest guitarist’s tool since the invention of the tuner. For those of us without a Master’s in Music Theory it is invaluable. Great job with this! TOTALLY worth the $6.

I’m an amateur pianist with some background in theory, but tend to find myself being lazy about chord and scale choices when playing or composing.
Great idea, good product, great potential for improvement. If you want to write songs you need talent. This app is useful for checking out different chords for songs you have been working on already on a real instrument.

I’m always coming up with song ideas in the most creatively inconvenient places (on the subway, at work, etc.). This app not only provides a sketchpad for chords, but it also helps me come up some interesting reharmonizations. I recommend this to any songwriter/musician looking for an inspirational creative tool.

I’m loving this app. It’s great for non-musicians to noodle around at building song snippets or just seeing if you can re-create the chords from songs you already know (took me about a minute to re-create the intro to “Lean On Me”). But what the app desperately needs is some sort of record function. I’ve come up with so many snippets, I’ve started to forget the tempo and rhythm of some of them. Another nice touch would be a piano keyboard page that would allow you to pluck out melodies as you play back the chords you have already recorded. All in all, a great start on a very cool app.

I love this app. It’s really useful, and well thought out. It’s worth the money. I do, however, experience quite a bit of lag once my song exceeds 3 chords. It’s still usable, but my 3G doesn’t seem to like it much. *edit* I just updated my phone to the latest OS/firmware, and now the app runs great. Make sure you are up to date before using this app. Now that it functions as intended, prochords gets 5 stars. It’s a useful song sketching tool with a powerful and handy midi export feature. It’s well worth the money for anyone who takes advantage of midi, and enjoyable even for those that don’t.

I am usually able to write a decent melody off of a chord or two. Transitioning beyond that is my weakness and this program helps a lot. For those that need guitar tablature for chords, export to midi and then use a program like Tabledit to translate to tablature. There’s lots of programs that translate midis to tab, but Tabledit is the best I have found over the years.

This app is so well designed for what it’s supposed to do. I need help with a chord progression, I open this app, and five minutes later I’m exporting a MIDI track to import into Ableton Live. The UI is so fluid and helpful, it makes sense and is a complete joy to use. With ProChord I can work on songs anywhere and when away from my instruments. The only way this app would be better is if it were free, and let’s face it—$6 is as close to free as any music software worth using.

This little toy/tool is wonderful! It allows you to play chord progressions when you are thinking about a song lyric and want to sing it with chords etc. It also gives you the power to rethink progressions when you are not near an instrument. I havent spent much time with it yet so I am sure it is more powerful than I know right now…

To be great, add diagrams for the chords on a guitar! If this was on there i would have paid another dollor or two. This is not asking much. Hope to see this update soon! Then i’ll change it to 5 stars. Also, if they release a ProChords just for guitar, i’ll be pissed. Nowhere does this say ProChords Piano, so they should just add it to this one, and change the icon. If they were planning on releasing different apps for different instruments, they should have said so. That way people could have waited. I don’t regret buying it though.

An extraordinary program. As an a cappella arranger–and as someone who will forever regret not paying better attention in my theory classes–I MUST know what chords my songs have before being able to write multiple parts out. This program is exactly what I have been looking for. How have I survived for so long without it?! With the following improvements, this program would easily be worth $10. — Better file management. —-Folders and sub-folders to organize files (sub-folders because I see myself using this program a lot!). —-A way to email/export MULTIPLE files, either by selecting manually, or all existing in a folder, or ALL. They should be put into a zip file. Exporting to MIDI is nice, but I’m more concerned with data backup and restore (I’d rather text just convert the exports to MIDI on my own desktop PC when I need it…which I don’t at the moment). — Better UI for long chord progressions. —-Additional navigational button to play the current chord and move left (backwards to previous chord). —-SOMETHING to more easily find the desired chord in a long progression…even a simple textual scroll-list would work. —-A lock-the-”drag track” to play the chords on screen, without accidentally making them fly off one side or the other. —-A way to copy multiple contiguous (next to each other) chords and paste them either into the current file or into another file. A simple “mark” button (or perhaps double-clicking the copy button), where you mark the first chord, then move to the final chord and press copy. Then paste as normal. One more thing. I cannot for the life of me figure out the next chord in America from West Side Story: C/E Bass:C — C/G Bass:C — F Bass:F — F/C Bass:F — F/A Bass:F — C/E Bass:C — C/G Bass:C — G/B Bass:G — G/B Bass:G — G Bass:G — ????
As a music producer thinking of chords when I’m not by my keyboard is hard but this with this I can just make chord progressions on the go and on top of that send the chords to my email in MIDI format for later use on any DAW program

I do five reviews a year at most - and only for exceptional (IMHO) apps. As a professional songwriter (jingles, ghost-writing, TV, and games) this is FINALLY the app I’ve been waiting for! Progressions are the bedrock of composing and this app makes it almost too easy. Yeah, a melody line instrument would be cool but even without it, this app kills. Great going guys/gals! Beautifully done

Wow!!!

Just what I’ve been looking for - definately needs a record function to be perfect Love the simplicity

¡El diablo!

Simply the best app ever! Now I go back and listen to possible chord movements to songs I already play in church in my piano. Then it offers me different variations to that same chord progression. It is truly excellent. I hope it can record in the near future.

Great…and please add…
by elbradamontes on Jan 14, 2010 v1.0.0

I got this, simple songwriter, 4track, beatmaker ages ago, and quite foolishly that xenon studio whathaveyou. I really like this app and simple songwriter. These two apps do not try to replace real instruments. Why they do is offer (especially prochords) an iPhone unique experience. Great work. PLEASE add a record/playback function, possibly one that displays the chords whilst being played (I’m a guitar teacher and this would be a fun improve tool) and for the love of pete an audio recording option to lay down scratch vocal tracks! Do that and you have the perfect on the go song writing tool. My best ideas come to me in the car or half asleep which is a bit inconvinient. Add a recording function and I would no lie pay quadruple the price without blinking. Oh, and I’d make all my students with an iPhone or iPod (which is 90% of them) buy this app. I just might anyway.

This app is great for giving you different chord options, their suitability with the flexibility to change the chord or notes as you wish.
I was searching for a chord app for piano, when I ran into this one. It does what I wanted, but much more! I wanted to learn to play ‘A Salty Dog’ (Procol Harum) in this app I entered the chords bij name as I could read on chordie.com, I exported it to midi and imported it into logic and then I made a print of the score: great. And now I’m going to explore the new song making features…. Til now I used simple songwriter, which gives a format based on the circle of fifth’s, but now I can get outside of that. With the record function to come it’s promissing to be even better. This app is the best app I bought ( 1,5 year iphone-owner) so far! Sjoerd

Mvh.

Balder Olrik

So let me introduce the basic elements of ProChords User interface

The Arrow Pointer:
The arrow in top of the screen indicates which of the chords above will be affected by your action.

The Progression Band:
When you open the interface, you will find that there is a single chord pre chosen. This chord constitutes the first chord in the song you are about to write. And the first of any number of chords you can add from here on. The sequence of chords you choose is referred to as your Progression Band. The chosen chords can be dragged back and forwards by using your finger on the screen.

Drag the pre chosen C chord on top of the screen to the left by using your finger. Press the “find match” button. Press the chord you want next from the list. Press green push button.
Drag this chord left to make space for at new chord. Add a few more chords if you like, and you have a Progression Band!

How to change a chord in your song
Drag the progression band from side to side and you will notice the arrow pointer can be positioned in three places in relation to the chord.

The Progression band can be dragged, so you can add and edit as you please.
• To extend the chord progression - Drag the Progression Band to the far left and press the Find Match button, as described above.
• To insert a chord between two chords - Drag the band, so the arrow points at the space between the chords and press the Find Match button
• To insert a chord in the beginning - Drag the band to the far right and press the Find Match button
• To substitute a chord with an alternative chord - Drag the band so the arrow points at the chord and press the Find Match button
• NB: If you only want to adjust the way the chord is played, or change a single note in the chord. the Edit Feature is likely to be the convenient option.

When You have decided what part of the Progression Band you want to elaborate, press the Find Match button and ProChords will make a search in its extensive database looking for similarities to the chord sequence you are focusing on.

A list of suggestions will appear. The list can be scrolled.

All the chords suggestions are rated, based on similarity to the huge number of successful songs in the database.
• 7 & 6 stars are the most common used choices in the song database
• 5 & 4 stars are chords with an edge, but still commonly used
• 3 stars are chords that are unusual, but has been used occasionally.
• 2 & 1 stars: ProChords cannot find this chord sequence previously used in the database but have found a related match

It’s up to you to decide, what chord you prefer to insert. To make your choice, tab on any of the different suggestions you find after pressing the find match button. To hear what they sound like before choosing them just press the chord. It may be helpful to hear them in immediate context with the chords you’ve already chosen for your chord progression. So this is what you could do:

There are two different techniques for playing the chord progression:

    • Press the visible chords in the progression band, one by one, and then press the chord from the Find Match options you’re thinking of.
• Alternatively, add the chord to the progression band by pressing the round green push button , just below the arrow pointer. Then use the three play buttons in the bottom of the screen to hear the progression.
• The left play button, plays the first chord in the progression
• The centre play button, repeat the current chord
• And the right play button, plays the next chord in the progression.
If You have reached the end of the progression, the right play button will loop it.

You can close the find match screen again, either by pressing the green check mark button or the red X button.
The green check mark button saves the changes you’ve made and the red X button cancels them.
You don’t have to close the find match panel
You can drag the progression band one step and go on searching for the next chord.

A chord can obviously be played in numerous ways. ProChords does not cover all combinations, but with the tweak buttons you will get pretty far.

The bass buttons:
If you take a look at the piano on top of the screen while you press the bass buttons.
+ and – will move the bass note. You will see that the symbol on the piano above appears either in blue or red. Blue indicates that the note is part of the chord you have chosen. Red is for notes that are not part of the chosen chord. If you prefer no bass note at all, just press – till the note disappears en the left side of the piano.

The octave buttons:
Let’s say you have a C chord in your progression band and want to go down to a B chord. ProChords will suggest a chord upwards almost an octave higher.
Then press the -1 button, And the chord will be placed an octave lower.
The octave buttons affects all the chord suggestions you are about to add.

The inversion buttons:
If you press either the + button or - button the chord will roll up or down on the piano. (Until further development of ProChords, chords containing a 9, 11 or 13 can’t be inverted).

In some situations you may want to use the chord wheel in the edit panel to find the chord you are looking for. There are several thousands different chords in the system, so the list has been split up into 4 wheels, in order to ease accessibility.
Second wheel contains (add, aug, dim,m,maj, mMaj, sus)
